The honest short answer: if you deliver supported independent living (SIL) or run an NDIS digital platform, you're affected now. If you deliver personal care, daily living support, or supports in closed settings, you're in the next wave (from 2027). Most other providers will be in scope by 2030. Here's how to place yourself precisely.

Caught now — you must act by 1 October 2026

Mandatory registration commenced 1 July 2026 for two support types. If either is you, you must be registered or have applied by 1 October 2026:

  • Supported independent living (SIL) — managing and delivering home-and-living support for a person who needs support at, or for most of, the day (registration group 0138).
  • NDIS digital platform providers — online platforms that act as an intermediary connecting participants with support workers and process NDIS-funded payments (group 0137).

You are not caught now — even if you use support workers — if the person only receives a few hours of support a week, or chooses and manages their own support workers (directing, planning and rostering them). And support-coordination registration was consulted on but paused, so support coordinators aren't caught by this wave.

Coming next — from 1 July 2027

The Government's Securing the NDIS for Future Generations timeline sets out the expansion. From 1 July 2027, mandatory registration begins rolling out to providers of higher-risk activities, specifically named as:

  • personal care,
  • daily living supports, and
  • supports provided in closed settings.

If that's your work, you're not caught by the 1 October 2026 deadline — but you are next, and the same audit-and-standards process applies. It's worth getting your Practice Standards and worker screening in order ahead of time rather than in a rush.

A separate step — provider enrolment (from 2027)

Distinct from registration, the same timeline introduces a new enrolment system that captures a minimum basic level of identifiable information on most NDIS providers, rolling out from 1 July 2027 with all in-scope providers to be enrolled by December 2027. Enrolment is a lighter-touch "who are you" step, not a full registration — but it means even providers not yet required to register will have an obligation. Don't confuse the two: enrolment ≠ registration.

Eventually — all in-scope providers by 2030

The end state is broad. Under the timeline, expanded mandatory registration continues so that all in-scope providers are registered by December 2030. Practically, that means most providers delivering NDIS supports should expect to be registered at some point this decade — the question is which wave, not whether.

Work out your bucket

Place yourself:

  • Deliver SIL or run a platform? → Caught now. Act by 1 October 2026.
  • Deliver personal care, daily living support, or supports in closed settings? → Next wave, from 1 July 2027. Prepare now.
  • Something else? → Likely a later wave (by 2030), plus enrolment from 2027. Watch the timeline.
  • Only a few hours, or the participant self-manages workers? → Not SIL; not caught by the current wave.

Because the scope is defined in the Provider Registration Rules and the government timeline evolves, confirm your exact position against the primary sources below before making decisions — and if you're caught now, start with how to register.

Frequently asked questions

Who has to register for the NDIS right now?

As of 1 July 2026, providers delivering supported independent living (SIL) or NDIS digital platform services must register, and be registered or have applied by 1 October 2026. Other provider types are not yet required to register under this wave — support-coordination registration was consulted on but paused.

Is personal care affected by mandatory NDIS registration?

Not in the current wave, but it's next. The Government's timeline has expanded mandatory registration beginning 1 July 2027 for higher-risk activities including personal care, daily living supports, and supports in closed settings. If that's your work, you're not caught by the 1 October 2026 deadline but should prepare for 2027.

When will all NDIS providers have to be registered?

Under the Securing the NDIS for Future Generations timeline, expanded mandatory registration rolls out so that all in-scope providers are registered by December 2030. A separate, lighter enrolment system also applies to most providers, rolling out from 1 July 2027 with all in scope enrolled by December 2027.

What's the difference between registration and enrolment?

Registration is the full process — meeting the NDIS Practice Standards, worker screening and an independent audit. Enrolment is a lighter step that captures a minimum basic level of identifiable information about a provider. The government timeline introduces enrolment for most providers from 2027; it is not the same as being registered.

I use support workers but participants manage their own rosters — am I affected?

Probably not, in the current wave. It is not SIL where a person chooses and manages their own support workers (directing, planning and rostering them), or only receives a few hours of support a week. SIL specifically means managing and delivering home-and-living support for someone who needs support at or for most of the day.
