About Able Mentor Services

Able Mentor Services is a Brisbane disability-support business based at Murarrie, on the city’s southside, working across Logan, Brisbane, the Redlands, Ipswich and the Gold Coast. The legal entity is ABILITY MENTOR SOLUTIONS PTY LTD (ABN 21 678 707 009), an Australian private company active and GST-registered since July 2024, with “Able Mentor Services” recorded on the ABR as its registered business name. The business describes its particular strength as complex support needs — behavioural, psychosocial and co-occurring medical — and transitions from hospital, the family home or another provider.

The founder, Paul Chalker, is described on the business’s own site as having more than twenty years in disability support, beginning in New Zealand, including work helping people leave institutions; that account is the business’s own. In their own words, the business commits to answering every enquiry within one business day, giving “a straight answer about fit, including when we’re not the right provider”, no lock-in contracts, and rosters published four weeks ahead.

Able Mentor Services takes NDIS referrals from plan-managed and self-managed participants. It is not currently registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. The business says on its own site that its registration application is with the Commission and that its certification audit is underway; ProviderScout has not verified that with the Commission, and this page will show a registration only once the Commission’s register records one. The Commission’s rules on when registration is required are the authoritative source for which supports an unregistered provider can deliver, and when. For NDIA-managed (agency-managed) participants, an unregistered provider generally is not an option at all.

The business is also plain about what it does not do: no short-term accommodation or respite (STA), no housing or specialist disability accommodation (SDA), and no support coordination or plan-management advice.

Services Able Mentor Services provides

The five services below are the ones Able Mentor Services’ own website describes as supports it delivers. Availability can vary and the business says it sometimes recruits specifically for a new participant, so confirm directly that a specific support fits your plan and timeframe.

  • Supported Independent Living (SIL) — around-the-clock support in a shared home for adults with complex behavioural, psychosocial or medical support needs; the business provides the support workers and daily structure, with the home itself coming from a housing provider or the participant’s own arrangements. Houses are described as being on Brisbane’s southside and bayside. The business also offers to continue supports where a participant already lives, including where another provider currently delivers SIL
  • Community participation — individual and small-group support to get to a course, a job, sport, friends, the shops or the water, built around the participant’s goals rather than a program timetable
  • Personal activities and daily living — help at home with personal care, cooking, cleaning and routines, done with the participant and building skills where they want to
  • Travel and transport — support to get where you are going, including for people whose mobility, sensory or behavioural support needs make standard transport hard
  • Behaviour support implementation — implementing positive behaviour support plans written by the participant’s own behaviour support practitioner, with documentation, trained workers and structured reviews

Unregistered NDIS providers โ€” what that means for you

Able Mentor Services is not currently registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. It is honest to say so plainly, because for some participants it matters and for others it does not.

If your plan is self-managed or plan-managed, you can engage an unregistered provider for many everyday supports, provided the support is an NDIS support funded in your plan and purchased in line with your plan and the NDIS funding rules. There are supports that require Commission registration regardless of how your plan is managed, and the rules have been changing; the NDIS Commission’s own guidance on when registration is required is the right place to check, because the list changes over time and can carry transitional arrangements. If your plan is NDIA-managed, you generally need a registered provider to invoice the NDIA directly, so an unregistered support service is not usually an option at all.

Sort out the funding route before the first appointment, not after. The NDIS Code of Conduct applies to every NDIS provider, registered or not, and the Commission’s complaints process is open to anyone who wants to raise concerns about an unregistered provider’s conduct.

What to ask before choosing a support provider

For SIL, ask which houses currently have vacancies, who the other residents are, how the support roster works, and what happens to your supports if you move house or change provider.

For behaviour support implementation, ask how the team works with your behaviour support practitioner, how incidents are documented and reviewed, and how often the plan is revisited.

For everyday supports, ask who your regular worker would be, what happens when that person is on leave, and how a swap is handled. Ask for a meet-and-greet before committing.

NDIS supports in Brisbane

Able Mentor Services’ published office is at Murarrie QLD 4172, on Brisbane’s southside, in the Brisbane NDIS service district. The business describes its service area as Logan, Brisbane, the Redlands, Ipswich and the Gold Coast.

Comparing a few providers is worth the time, especially for SIL, where the individual house and support team matter as much as the organisation.
