Understanding plan management under the NDIS

The most common complaints about plan management are slow invoice processing, opaque budget reporting, and provider-payment failures that the participant only finds out about when the provider chases them. None of these are inherent to plan management — they're operational failings that vary widely between providers. Before signing with any plan manager, ask three questions: what's their median invoice-to-payment time (the answer should be 3-5 business days), do they offer a real-time online budget portal (most reputable providers do), and how do they handle provider payment disputes (a good answer involves contacting both parties before withholding payment).

Plan management fees come from a separate budget line in your NDIS plan (a fixed $104.45/month under the 2026-27 NDIS Pricing Schedule; the setup fee was removed on 1 July 2025). They don't reduce your therapy or support-worker funding. Switching plan managers does not trigger a second setup fee — so the choice is worth getting right at the start.

A frequently-overlooked benefit of plan management is access to unregistered NDIS providers. Agency-managed participants can only use registered providers; this restricts choice in many service categories (notably support coordination, psychology, and occupational therapy in regional areas). Plan management opens the unregistered market while still offloading the administrative burden.

Reporting frequency varies meaningfully. Some plan managers send a monthly statement; others provide a real-time dashboard. For participants whose plan is tight, real-time visibility is materially more useful — it lets you adjust service patterns before you run out of funding rather than after.
