Understanding Supported Independent Living (SIL)
Supported Independent Living is one of the most significant supports funded by the NDIS. SIL covers the cost of support workers helping participants with the daily tasks of living in a shared or individual home — personal care, cooking, cleaning, medication prompting, overnight support, and help with household routines. SIL does not pay for rent or the physical home itself; that’s covered separately under your housing arrangements.
SIL is funded based on an assessment of the participant’s support needs, typically measured in support hours per day across a set roster. Participants with higher support needs receive more hours, including overnight active or sleepover support. Because SIL is high-cost, the NDIS scrutinises SIL funding closely — a SIL provider prepares a detailed roster of care and submits quotes that the NDIA reviews before approving.
Choosing a SIL provider is a significant decision. The right provider matches the participant’s support needs, communication style, cultural preferences, and lifestyle. It’s worth asking any prospective provider about staff continuity, how they manage shift handovers, how they recruit and train support workers, and how they support participants to develop new skills rather than simply deliver care.
Participants moving into SIL arrangements often also need help with the practical side of setting up a home — furniture, utilities, assistive technology, and community connection. A good SIL provider works alongside support coordinators and the participant’s informal network to get this right from day one.
What to ask before choosing an NDIS provider
Before signing a service agreement with any NDIS provider, including Elmur Community Services, it’s worth having a conversation about a few key things. What are the hourly rates, including loadings for evenings, weekends and public holidays? What cancellation fees apply, and what notice period do they require? Who will your regular support worker be, and what happens if they’re sick or on leave? How does the provider handle complaints? These questions are standard — any reputable provider will have clear answers.
Elmur Community Services is registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, which means they’re bound by the NDIS Code of Conduct and must meet service standards audited by approved quality auditors. This covers everything from worker screening to incident reporting, and applies especially rigorously for High-intensity supports and SIL.
It’s also worth understanding your service agreement before you sign it. The agreement should clearly state the supports being delivered, the price per hour or unit, any cancellation policy, how travel charges are handled, and how either party can end the agreement. Under the NDIS, you have the right to change providers at any time — you’re never locked in.
If you’re unsure about any aspect of choosing a provider, your support coordinator or local area coordinator (LAC) can help. They can explain what to look for, accompany you to initial meetings, and assist with setting up service agreements that protect your interests.
NDIS supports in Perth’s Southern Suburbs
Canning Vale sits at the centre of Perth’s south-eastern corridor, with strong transport links to Cannington, Gosnells, Armadale and the Perth CBD. The South Metro service district hosts a significant number of NDIS providers across SIL, allied health, and day programs, and has particularly high demand for providers who can deliver high-intensity supports.
Most participants in the South Metro region access a mix of services — commonly SIL or daily living support, community participation, and allied health. Travel charges under the NDIS are capped and must be agreed in your service agreement before work begins.
