Understanding speech pathology under the NDIS

Speech pathologists also work with adults who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), from simple picture boards to sophisticated speech-generating devices.

AAC is a growing area of speech pathology practice. For participants who are non-verbal or have limited speech, an AAC assessment identifies the most appropriate communication system. This might be low-tech (communication boards, visual schedules) or high-tech (tablet-based apps, dedicated devices). The speech pathologist works with the participant, their family, and support workers to implement the system across all environments.

Assessment typically takes one to two sessions, followed by a report with therapy recommendations and goals. Ongoing therapy sessions usually run weekly or fortnightly, depending on the participant’s needs and plan funding. Progress is measured against specific, measurable goals set at the start of the therapy block.

When choosing a speech pathologist, ask about their experience with your specific communication or swallowing needs. Telehealth sessions can be effective for many types of speech therapy, particularly for older children and adults, and can improve access for participants in regional areas.
