Unregistered NDIS providers — what that means for you

If your plan is self-managed or plan-managed, you can use any provider you choose, registered or not, so long as the support is a reasonable and necessary use of your funding. In practice a large share of NDIS supports in allied health are delivered by unregistered clinics on exactly this basis. If your plan is NDIA-managed, you generally need a registered provider to invoice the NDIA directly, so an unregistered clinic is not usually an option.

The clinic works with children and their families; the funding route is the thing to sort out before your first session, not after.

What to ask before choosing an allied health clinic

Ask which clinician your child would see and what happens if that person is away. Continuity matters a great deal in paediatric therapy, and it depends on the individual more than on the size of the clinic.

Ask how sessions are structured — how much of the appointment is direct therapy time and how much is notes, planning and follow-up — and get the fees for standard, outreach, telehealth and assessment sessions in writing before you sign anything. Ask what the cancellation policy is and how much notice they need.

For assessments, ask what is included in the flat fee: the appointment time, the scoring and interpretation, and the written report are usually all part of the same fee, but check.
