Understanding SDA & high-intensity care under the NDIS
Specialised Disability Accommodation (SDA) is housing designed for participants with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs. SDA funding pays for the property — not the support services delivered inside it — and is paid directly to the SDA provider by the NDIA. Only Commission-registered SDA providers can receive SDA payments, which makes registration meaningful in this category in a way it isn't for ordinary support work.
When evaluating an SDA provider, participants typically look at design category (Improved Liveability, Fully Accessible, Robust, High Physical Support), location and proximity to family/community, vacancy timing, and whether the SDA provider also operates as the SIL (Supported Independent Living) provider for the same dwelling. Many participants and families prefer their SDA provider and SIL provider to be separate — keeping the housing relationship distinct from the daily-support relationship — but co-location is common and not inherently a problem.
High-intensity personal activities (the "Assist Personal Activities High" registration group) covers participants whose daily-living support involves clinical tasks: complex bowel care, ventilator management, severe dysphagia, complex wound management, enteral feeding, severe behaviour support implementation, or seizure management. Providers in this group must demonstrate specific staff training and competency sign-off above and beyond the standard support-worker baseline. Worth asking specifically about staff training records and competency frameworks if your supports fall into this category.
What to ask before choosing an NDIS provider
Before signing a service agreement with any NDIS provider, including SymCare, it's worth having a conversation about a few key things. What are the hourly rates, including loadings for evenings, weekends and public holidays? What cancellation fees apply, and what notice period do they require? Who will your regular support worker be, and what happens if they're sick or on leave? How does the provider handle complaints? These questions are standard — any reputable provider will have clear answers.
SymCare is registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission (view official Commission listing) with 12 approved registration groups including SDA and high-intensity Personal Activities — both categories where registration is meaningful (SDA payments only flow to registered providers; Agency-managed participants for high-intensity care are restricted to registered providers). Their period of registration is in force until 02 February 2029.
It's also worth understanding your service agreement before you sign it. The agreement should clearly state the supports being delivered, the price per hour or unit, any cancellation policy, how travel charges are handled, and how either party can end the agreement. For SDA specifically, the housing agreement is separate from the support agreement — read both carefully and don't assume they're aligned in their notice periods or termination clauses. Under the NDIS, you have the right to change support providers at any time; SDA changes are typically slower because they involve a physical move.
If you're unsure about any aspect of choosing a provider, your support coordinator or local area coordinator (LAC) can help. They can explain what to look for, accompany you to initial meetings, and assist with setting up service agreements that protect your interests.
