VennCare is a mobile occupational therapy practice in South West Sydney, seeing children and adults at home, at school and by telehealth. VennCare takes NDIS referrals from self-managed and plan-managed participants and from support coordinators. It is not registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, which does not prevent it from supporting participants funded either of those ways — but an NDIA-managed (agency-managed) participant generally cannot use an unregistered provider. Which category you fall into is the thing to check before booking.

The practice also prepares reports for older Australians funded through My Aged Care, Home Care Packages and the Commonwealth Home Support Programme. That is a separate funding route from the NDIS.

• Home and living assessments — reports that give the NDIS evidence for home and living decisions, which may point to SIL, SDA, an Individualised Living Option, home modifications or support in your current home
• Assistive equipment — assessment, prescription and training for equipment such as wheelchairs, scooters and specialised seating
• OT consultation — a general starting point for families and adults who need clinical direction or are unsure which OT pathway fits

Unregistered NDIS providers — what that means for you

VennCare is not registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. It is honest to say so plainly, because for some participants it matters and for others it does not.

If your plan is self-managed or plan-managed, you can use any provider you choose, registered or not, so long as the support is a reasonable and necessary use of your funding. If your plan is NDIA-managed, you generally need a registered provider to invoice the NDIA directly, so an unregistered practice is not usually an option.

Sort out the funding route before the first appointment, not after.

What to ask before choosing an occupational therapist

Ask which therapist you would see and what happens if that person is away. Continuity matters a great deal in therapy, and it depends on the individual more than on the size of the practice.

For reports, ask for a written quote that sets out the assessment's purpose, the estimated hours, travel and the report timeframe before you book. VennCare's own fees page says it quotes this way; it is a reasonable thing to expect from any provider.

For home visits, ask how travel time is charged and whether your suburb is inside their usual service area.

NDIS supports in South Western Sydney

Edmondson Park is in the Liverpool local government area, which sits in the South Western Sydney NDIS service district. VennCare's website lists the suburbs it visits, including Liverpool, Prestons, Leppington, Campbelltown, Camden, Narellan, Fairfield and Bankstown.

Comparing a few practices is worth the time, especially where waitlists are long or the fit with the individual therapist is going to matter.
