The National Disability Insurance Scheme funds a wide range of supports across three budget categories. Core Supports cover daily living assistance, community participation, consumables, and transport. Capacity Building covers coordination, therapy services, employment support, and training for independence. Each provider registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission must meet specific practice standards, maintain appropriate insurance, and employ workers who have passed NDIS Worker Screening Checks. Registered providers can serve Agency-managed, plan-managed, and self-managed participants. Unregistered providers can only work with plan-managed and self-managed participants, but many offer excellent services and greater flexibility.

When comparing NDIS providers, consider their specialisation, location, availability, and communication style. Ask for references from other participants if possible, and don’t hesitate to request a trial period before committing to a service agreement. The NDIS is designed to give participants choice and control — exercising that choice starts with asking the right questions and understanding what each provider brings to the table.

Service agreements are not permanent. If you find that a provider isn’t meeting your needs, you can end the agreement and switch to another provider at any time. Keeping records of your interactions, invoices, and any issues that arise will make transitions smoother and provide useful evidence at your next plan review.
